The female header part has extra spaces to make it 13.6mm tall: when placed on your Pi, a PCB will clear the Ethernet and USB jacks. The stacky pin part is also extra-long, 9.7mm, so that when a standard 1.5mm thickness PCB is installed, there will be 8mm remaining, plenty to plug into.

Absolutely no soldering required! All that's needed is a few gentle taps with a hammer and bazinga! Your header is securely attached to your Pi Zero or pHAT.

Male + Female + Installation Jig

If your soldering isn't quite up to scratch, or you just don't own a soldering iron yet, then these nifty hammer headers might be just the job. They come in male and female flavours, and use crafty little retaining nubbins to grip tightly into the holes on the PCB.

The installation jig kit contains two acrylic base pieces, onto which your Pi Zero or pHAT sits, two nylon bolts, an acrylic top piece onto which you hammer, and both a male and female header. Make sure you carefully read our guide for fitting hammer headers.

We strongly recommend using our installation jig! If you want to try without it then godspeed to you but it is a delicate and tricky process! The female headers are simpler to insert than the male headers as you can hammer straight onto the plastic of the header, but the male ones are particularly tricky without the jig.

Please note: we can't be held responsible for any damage that you may cause to your Pi Zero, pHAT, fingers, or headers while fitting them. If you follow our guide carefully then you should be fine. If this worries you, then get yourself a soldering iron instead!

These 40-pin 2x20 male headers from our friends at The Pi Hut can be used on a Raspberry Pi Zero and are colour-coded for your prototyping convenience.

You'll never have to search for a ground pin again!

The colour coding is nice and simple:

  • Red = 5V
  • Yellow = 3V3
  • Black = GND
  • Blue = DNC (Reversed I2C)

For hard-mode try installing the header the wrong way round and throwing away your normal pin reference! ;-)

Raspberry Pi HAT Socket Header (SMT) (1A5 HAT socket header SMT)

This custom-made, 2x20 SMT female socket header is "that" header used in many Raspberry Pi HAT designs and recommended for HAT specification products by the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

It's a surface mount female "push-fit" type socket designed to be used to plug a Raspberry Pi HAT onto a Raspberry Pi A+/B+/2/3. The sockets are push-fit, so harder to use than the Thru-Hole type headers, but for the slickest, slimmest fit, this header is recommended! These are individually packaged parts from a pick & place reel, but come complete with the pick and place plate. The pins are large enough to be hand soldered, so perfect for prototyping and small batch runs!
