TEC1-12715 12V Peltier Plate Module (Peltier 12V 40x40)
Description:

Thermoelectric coolers (TEC or Peltier) create a temperature differential on each side. One side gets hot and the other side gets cool. Therefore, they can be used to either warm something up or cool something down, depending on which side you use. You can also take advantage of a temperature differential to generate electricity.

This Peltier works very well as long as you remove the heat from the hot side. After turning on the device, the hot side will heat quickly, the cold side will cool quickly. If you do not remove the heat from the hot side (with a heat sink or other device), the Peltier will quickly reach stasis and do nothing. We recommend using an old computer CPU heatsink or other block of metal to pull heat from the hot side. We were able to use a computer power supply and CPU heatsink to make the cold side so uncomfortably cold we could not hold our finger to it.

Note: It is imperative that a heat sink is used on the hot side of the module. Running the module without one can cause damage to this part. If it’s too hot to comfortably touch, you’re in the danger zone!

Fan SHIM for Raspberry Pi (Fan Shim)
Description:

Assembly

Assembly is really easy, and will take less than two minutes.

  1. With the component side of the PCB facing upwards, push the two M2.5 bolts through the holes from below, then screw on the first pair of nuts to secure them and act as spacers.
  2. Push the fan's mounting holes down onto the bolts, with the cable side of the fan downwards (as pictured) and the text on the fan upwards. Attach with another two nuts.
  3. Push the fan's JST connector into the socket on Fan SHIM.

Software

Our Python library lets you control the fan (on/off), RGB LED, and switch. There's a handful of examples to show you how to use each feature, and a script to install a daemon (a service that runs in the background) that runs the fan in automatic mode, triggering it on or off when the CPU reaches a threshold temperature, with a manual override via the tactile switch.

Notes

  • When mounting or detaching the fan, or assembled Fan SHIM, do not push on the fan itself, as it is liable to break.

Fitting Instructions



1 Insert Raspberry Pi 4 unit into the lower half (base) of the case, taking care to first remove any SD card, and to align the connectors with the apertures in the base.

2 Insert the case fan into the upper half (lid) of the case, with the fan pointing away from the lid. The two tabs on the fan housing should fit neatly into the inside of the tabs on the lids, and the slightly curved edge of the housing should be flush with the underside of the lid.

3 If you are also fitting the heatsink, remove the backing paper from the selfadhesive pad on the base of the heatsink, position it centrally over the processor and gently press it in position.

4 Connect the wires from the fan to the Raspberry Pi 4 40-pin GPIO header as follows:

5 Assemble the case.

Using your fan

Once you have connected your fan, by default it will be on whenever your Raspberry Pi is running. You can configure it to turn on only when your Raspberry Pi reaches a temperature that you choose.

Using a recent version of Raspberry Pi OS, first update to retrieve any recent changes to the operating system:

  1. Open the Terminal, either from the Start menu (click the Raspberry Pi icon in the top left corner) or by pressing Control Alt T.
  2. Type sudo apt update and then, when the update has finished, type sudo apt full-upgrade.

Then open the Raspberry Pi Configuration tool:

  1. Click on the Raspberry Pi icon in the top left corner and select Preferences then Raspberry Pi Configuration.
  2. Select the Performance tab.
  3. Next to Fan, click Enabled.
  4. If you have connected your fan as shown above, the default of 14 for Fan GPIO does not need to be changed.
  5. Select the Fan Temperature at which you want your fan to turn on. The default is 80°C, which will stop the Raspberry Pi throttling on difficult tasks without having the fan on all the time.

HATL01F Fan Auto-Control for Raspberry Pi (HATL01F Fan Control)
Description:

Do you want to extend the life of your fan, reduce its noise and control it automatically? With this automatic fan MaticControl module you will be able to do this.

Specifications:

Place it on pins 1-8. This is all you have to do on the hardware.

Then from Raspberry icon > Preferences> Raspberry Pi Configuration > Performance tab >set fan enable;
Fan GPIO  4; and the temperature at which you want the fan to turn on. Save with OK.

Thus, when the processor reaches the temperature you set, the fan will turn on. It will turn on off only when the processor temperature drops 10 degrees below the set on temperature. (For example, if you set the On temperature to 75 degrees, the fan will turn off when the processor reaches 65 degrees).
With these few easy steps, you now have automatic fan control.
