The SparkFun 16x2 SerLCD is a 16-character, 2-line display with black text on an RGB backlight, and it has its own brain built in. An ATmega328P on the back takes care of driving the LCD, so you don't need a separate backpack and your microcontroller only has to send the text.

You can talk to it over Serial, SPI or I2C, and the Qwiic connector makes I2C hookup plug-and-play with no soldering. Backlight colour, brightness and contrast are all set in software, and you can even program your own splash screen.

The firmware is open source and can be updated through the Arduino IDE. Note that the board uses 3.3V logic, so use a level shifter if you are connecting it to a 5V microcontroller.
