Welcome to the world of electronics. This kit is for a 555 a-stable multi vibrator. Or flip-flop for short.
The 555 timer ic has been a popular part of electronics since 1972 and it is still going strong today!

Read and understand the instructions first before you start soldering!

It is important for you to first identify the components and familiarize yourself with the printed circuit board (PCB) before you start to solder. Some components must only be installed in a certain way, and will not work if installed the wrong way around. These components are called “polarized” and care should be taken with their orientation.

What you will need(not included in this kit)

Your soldering gear.
A 9V battery to power your project.

And now for the good stuff....

1. The PCB





The pcb is the component that all the other components will be soldered to. It creates the frame for the project.
The components must be inserted from the side with the component values printed on it.
The printing is called silkscreen and it will also show you the correct placement of parts.

2. Resistors


Resistors can be installed in any orientation. Resistors have different values that are represented by colour bands. The colours are read from left to right with the silver or gold band to the right. Identify the resistors and place them in the pcb as shown by the silkscreen by bending the leads and
pressing the resistors flush with the pcb.

R1 = Brown, black, red, gold. = 1 k Ω
R2 = Brown, black, orange, gold. = 10 k Ω
R3, R4 = Yellow, violet, brown, gold. = 470 Ω ( * 2)

3 Integrated circuit (ic):



The ic is the heart of the circuit. Note that the ic has a little indentation or notch on one side; this shows the orientation of how the ic should be inserted into the pcb. Line the notch on the ic up with the notch on the silkscreen marked 555. You might have
to bend the legs of the ic slightly inwards in order to have them fit.

4 Light emitting diodes (LED):



The LED’s will be the eyes of our ghost. Care should be taken with their orientation as they are polarized. LED’s have two ways of showing us the polarization, a “cut out” in the LED and a difference in leg lengths. If a LED is placed the wrong way it
will simply not light up. Insert the LED’s with the cut out and short leg pointing towards the 555 ic into the eyes of the ghost.

5 Capacitor:


A capacitor is also polarized. When a capacitor is placed in the wrong orientation it might explode! There are also two ways we are shown the polarization: a white line on the side and a shorter leg. This is negative. The silkscreen on the pcb shows a positive and a white block. Make sure the shorter leg, close to the stripe on the capacitor, goes into the hole with the white block and the
long leg goes into the hole marked + in position C1.

6 Power:



Connect the red wire in position “PWR +” and the black wire in position “PWR –“ and you are all done!

Tips and tricks:


a) Solder the components in the order they were described to you, the “lowest” component to the “highest” component. This will help keep them in place. b) Bend the leads of the components “outwards” a bit, in order to help hold them in place.
c) Wipe the tip of the iron on a wet sponge every time you take it to solder.
d) Place the tip of the iron on the pad of the pcb against the component lead, wait half a second and then add the solder wire.
e) Do not add too much solder wire at a time, feed the wire slowly till you see the pad has enough solder

Soldering irons are hot so be very careful!

5X10cm Single Side Copper Prototyping PCB Breadboard 2,3,4,5 Joined Holes (1B2 copper prototype pcb)
